EQUINE EMBRYO TRANSFER (2008)
Requirements:
Owner supplies embryo donor mare and 1 to 3 recipient mares. Mares should be stabled at Rocky Bay Equine Clinic. Estrus cycles shall be synchronized utilizing Progesterone (Regu-mate) and Prostaglandin. Estrus cycles shall be closely monitored via ultrasound to determine donor breeding date and ovulation dates of all mares. Donor mare embryo recovery flush shall be preformed 7 days post-ovulation and if an embryo is recovered, it shall be transferred into the recipient mare at that time. If an embryo is not recovered, a second flush will be done 1-6 hours later. The recipient mare should be maintained on Regu-Mate until a positive progesterone blood test is performed.
Fees Involved:
- Donor Management Fee ($409.50). This fee covers management and breeding of the donor mare through one estrus cycle. Management includes board at the clinic (up to 7 days), ultrasound examinations, ordering shipped semen and artificial insemination.
- Recipient Management Fee ($329.50): This fee applies to each recipient mare, and includes board at the clinic (up to 7 days), and ultrasound examinations in order to determine date of ovulation and synchrony with donor. Synchronizing the cycles of the donor and recipient mares is critical for a successful outcome.
- Embryo Collection ($329.50): The donor mare’s uterus is flushed 3 times with a modified saline solution, the fluid is recovered, filtered and examined under a microscope to fine the prospective embryo(s). Extra Flush ($50): IF an embryo is not recovered on the first set of flushes, an extra uterine flush will be preformed 1-6 hours later in attempt to increase the chance of recovering a viable embryo. (These charges apply even if an embryo is not recovered).
- Embryo Transfer ($329.50): After an embryo is recovered from the donor mare, it is non-surgically transferred into the recipient mare’s uterus. If multiple embryos are recovered from the donor mare during the same flush, this fee will be charged for each embryo transferred to each recipient.
- Other Fees: Board fees of $22.30/day (after the first 7 days) will be charged for each mare. Additional charges will apply for necessary treatments of mares (ie., uterine culturing, flushing, ect.) Additional charges will apply for any pharmaceuticals used in synchronizing or treating the donor and recipient mares (ie., Regu-Mate, Prostaglandin, HCG, oxytocin, ect.)

MARE BREEDING SERVICES (2008)
Rocky Bay Equine Veterinary Clinic offers a full range of mare breeding services.
The objectives of these services are to provide horse owners with the most current technology available for the reproductive management of their mares. This document provides a brief overview of some of the mare breeding services offered by Rocky Bay Equine. For more complete details, contact us.
Mare breeding services include breeding with live-cover, artificial insemination (AI) with fresh semen, AI with shipped-cooled semen, or AI with frozen-thawed semen, as well as embryo transfer. Mare breeding services are provided on an outpatient (on farm) or inpatient basis (mare housed at Rocky Bay Equine Clinic). Most services are charged on a per-procedure basis.
In order to determine the optimal time of breeding, mares in heart are examined with transrectal palpation and ultrsonography as frequently as deemed necessary based on the method of breeding. Mares being bred with natural cover or AI with fresh semen are generally examined every other day while they are in heat. Mares being bred with shipped-cooled semen are generally examined on a daily basis while they are in heat. Mares being bred with frozen-thawed semen are generally examined on a daily basis when early in heat, and then two-four times daily when a pre-ovulatory follicle develops. After breed, mares are examined for pregnancy 14 to 16 days after ovulation. Routine hormone treatments are administered as necessary to bring mares into heat ( ie., prostaglandin) and to hasten ovulation (ie., hCG; or GnRH). In addition, uterine treatments (ie., antibiotic therapy and/or uterine lavage) are performed if deemed necessary based on ultrasound exam (ie., presence of free intrauterine fluid), or other diagnostic technique (ie., uterine culture).
Bo and Linda Weeks of Rocky Bay Equine both offer a wealth of experience in equine reproduction: Bo, as an equine veterinarian with a strong focus on reproduction, Linda, with a Master of Science degree in Equine Reproductive Physiology and years of breeding farm management.
